Jehovah Nissi 2 – The Lord Is My Banner
How to get Victory.
6-1-25
Exodus 17:8–16 (NIV) 8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” 10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”
We can experience physical and spiritual victory with the Lord’s banner waving over our battles.
Exodus 17:15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner.
“Jehovah-Nissi” is “The LORD is my Banner”.
A Banner is a Sign, Flag.
Example: The United States Flag:
Red, White, and Blue with the Stars and Stripes.
Flags represent National Pride.
At the Olympics, athletes lift their National Flag for the country they represent.
A Banner represents:
Who or what you belong to,
A Standard,
Victory.
The LORD, Jesus, IS my Sign, my Flag, my Standard.
The LORD, Jesus, IS my Victory.
When you Carry a Different Banner, Follow a Different Standard, Don’t expect Victory.
We as Christians only carry One Banner:
The Lord Jesus Christ is my Banner, Sign, Standard, Victory.
The Israelites had just defeated the enemy, the Amalekites.
Moses built an Alter and called it “The Lord is my Banner”, to Let God’s people know that if:
-They remain faithful to the Lord,
-They continue to look to God and trust Him,
Then, They will always have victory over their enemies.
Exodus 17:16 (NIV) He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”
As Christians, we are at war:
We are fighting against satan, the world, and the flesh.
We are fighting for souls to be saved.
Quote: Tell them that there is a God that loves them. Julie Arguinzoni.
Matthew 9:36–38 (NIV) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
John 4:34–35 (NIV) 34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
We can Experience Physical and Spiritual Victory with the Lord’s Banner Waving over our Battles.
1 Corinthians 15:57 (ESV) But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Victory Comes when You:
1. Have Total Dependence on the Power of God.
Exodus 17:9 (NIV) Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”
Exodus 17:11-12 (NIV) 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.
Exodus 17:13 (NIV) So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
By holding up the staff of God, Moses was:
-Declaration of total dependence on God to win the battle.
-Pursuing and Seeking God to Defend His people.
The Staff represented: An instrument of Power from Heaven.
God’s covenant promise to His People.
How do you win the battles? How do you fight back?
-Persevering in Prayer.
-Prevailing in Prayer.
-Build an Alter, Go to the Secret Place.
Exodus 17:14–15 (NIV) 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner.
Matthew 6:6 (NKJV) But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Prayer is not to get God to answer our Requests.
Prayer is how we can get hold of God and His Will.
Prayer is for the Glory of God.
Casual Believers, Followers:
Miss out on intimacy of Christ in their lives.
Lose their first love with Jesus.
Fight like Joshua, Pray Like Moses.
2 Corinthians 10:3–5 (NIV) 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Weapons:
The Bible: Word of God.
Prayer and Fasting:
Obedience.
Humility
Integrity
Right Motives
Is Prayer being pushed out of your life, our church?
Are you Too Busy to pray? Don’t have enough time to Pray?
Do You PUSH or do you CRASH?
P.U.S.H.: Pray Until Something Happens. This is Praying Through.
C.R.A.S.H.: Christians Running After Sunday Huddles.
Run through life after Church with little praying.
Prayer is our banner of protection.
Come to God’s alter to see the God’s power working in our lives.
Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV) Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Putting on the Armor of God is not enough.
After you put on the Armor of God, You must stay in Prayer.
The Armor of God with Prayer gives us Victory in our spiritual battles.
Ephesians 6:11 (ESV) Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
Belt of Truth
Breastplate of Righteousness
Shoes that bring the gospel of peace
Shield of Faith
Helmet of salvation
Sword of the Spirit: the Word of God.
Ephesians 6:18–20 (ESV) 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel,
20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
Jehovah Nissi: the Lord is my Banner, My Standard, My Victory
1 Corinthians 15:57 (ESV) But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Victory Comes when You:
2. Expect to be Attacked.
Exodus 17:8 (NIV) 8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
Don’t be surprised when you go through battles, trials, and temptations.
Expect to battle by being prepared to fight spiritual battles.
1 Peter 5:8–9 (NLT) 8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.
Satan does not fight a fair fight.
Deuteronomy 25:17–18 (NIV) 17 Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt.
18 When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.
Quote: Our real enemy is Satan himself, with all his unholy helpers. Even after we are saved, they keep attacking us in the hope that we will do something to dishonor God and thus rob him of his glory.
Victory Comes when You:
3. Are a soldier under orders.
Exodus 17:9–10 (NIV) 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” 10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.
In the Military:
-There is always someone of a higher rank than you.
-Following is not a choice, it’s a command.
Or you will be court-martialed,
Go to Prison, Dishonorable Discharged.
In God’s Army, we must also Come under rank.
Hebrews 13:17 (NLT) 17 Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.
Eph. 5:21 (NIV) Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Jesus is Our Commander and Chief
2 Timothy 2:3–4 (NIV) 3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.
Victory Comes when You:
4. Don’t fight alone
Exodus 17:9 (NIV) Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”
Exodus 17:10 (NIV) So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.
-Joshua fought with the soldiers that Moses ordered him to fight with.
-Moses went up the Hill with Aaron and Hur.
We need to fight together.
Hebrews 10:24–25 (NIV) 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
We need to fight for the Same Purpose
For each other
To Spread the Gospel
